Project meeting: 1 March 2013

Meeting agenda Friday 1 March

WOW! project: updates, student presentations, next tasks

How are we doing in terms of working toward our project goals (see 15 Feb mtg notes)?
  • Water-monitoring pilot data  on temperature & light have been collected for three weeks to date (updated 7 March); 2-3 days for the first two weeks, in two of the three project sites—Veteran’s Park culvert & Aselton Park docks
    • Note as of Thursday, 7 March: This week’s HOBO loggers are presently still in the water due to poor weather conditions—dr.g. doesn’t wish to slip into the bay—the loggers will be removed when the skies clear over the weekend; it’ll be interesting to see how the data changes over this week given the storm…hhmmm….this idea could lead to a side project on analyzing WOW! water temperature & light data along with weather measures that could be collected from reliable sources…any takers? Let dr. g. or Mrs. J know.
  • Toward understanding the need for stewardship of estuaries, during last week’s project meeting, CL gave a presentation on the properties of water.  The PowerPoint will be uploaded to the blog—check it out!
  • Mrs. J shared ideas about developing interdisciplinary science & mathematics connections; she suggested mathematical, statistical & graphical analysis that’s possible with the scientific data on temperature & light that the HOBO data-loggers collect; we collect on-going data through the day and overnight, every 30 minutes—what will you do with the data (we’d like everyone by the end of the project to carry out some analysis, with student presentations & an end-of-project celebration, too)
Next meeting
  • Half-day next Friday, 8 March, so we’d like to meet briefly at break for sign-ups for next volunteer tasks
    • Try to come to Room 206 at break, 9.45-9.55a.
    • If you can’t make the meeting, please check the blog later on for the sign-up list, once students have had the chance to sign-up at break; the sign-up file should be editable, so you can add you name to any task for which there's need.  Thanks for volunteering!
